Can a sewer line be fixed without digging a trench?
Yes. Trenchless sewer line repair fixes a damaged sewer pipe from the inside through one or two small access points, instead of a long trench across the yard. Done-Rite Plumbing & Rooter provides trenchless repair across Orange County.
Seeing soggy, suspiciously green spots in the yard, but dreading a long trench through the landscaping? Is the thought of a traditional dig-and-replace keeping you from fixing a persistent backup or sewer odor? Those are signs of a sewer line problem that needs professional attention. Done-Rite is ready to help you fix it.
What are the signs of a damaged sewer line?
The four common signs of a damaged sewer line are several slow drains, sewer odors indoors or outdoors, lush or wet spots in the yard, and more pests in or around the house.
Why are several drains slow at the same time?
Several sluggish fixtures, even after plunging, point to a blockage or damage in the main sewer line rather than one clogged drain.
When you flush a toilet, the sink in the same bathroom may drain slowly or the shower may back up. Left alone, a main line problem leads to a full backup, where sewage has nowhere to go but up and out of the lowest drains.
What does a sewer gas smell mean?
A persistent sewer gas smell near the drains or in the yard means gases are escaping through cracks or breaks in the sewer line.
The smell is a health concern and a sign the pipe is likely leaking sewage into the soil.
Why is part of my yard green and soggy?
Unusually green patches or soggy, muddy areas with no recent rain are tell-tale signs of a leaking sewer line. The wastewater is rich in nutrients and fertilizes the soil above it.
A leaking line is unsanitary, can contaminate groundwater, and can cause sinkholes or undermine the foundation over time.
Can sewer damage cause pest problems?
Yes. Cracks and breaks in a sewer line give rodents, cockroaches and other insects an easy path to water and shelter.
More pests in the house or around the yard point to a compromised line that needs attention.
What damages a sewer line?
The four most common causes of sewer line damage are tree roots, ground movement, improper installation or materials, and aging pipe. Each one affects which trenchless method fits best.
How do tree roots damage a sewer pipe?
Roots seek out moisture and nutrients and enter through a tiny crack in a sewer pipe. Inside, they grow into a dense mass that blocks flow and eventually cracks or crushes the pipe.
Roots are relentless. A trenchless liner or a new pipe installed by bursting has no joints for roots to get into.
How does shifting soil crack sewer pipes?
Moving ground stresses rigid sewer pipe and causes cracks, separated joints or collapse. Soil that swells when wet and shrinks when dry, plus normal settling, does this gradually.
A continuous trenchless pipe handles minor movement better than old, segmented pipe.
Can a poor installation cause sewer problems?
Yes. Some older sewer lines were installed with the wrong slope, poor bedding or unsuitable materials. Those flaws lead to bellies (sags) where waste collects and pipe that's more vulnerable to outside pressure.
Installation flaws cause chronic blockages and early failure.
Is old sewer pipe a good fit for trenchless repair?
Yes. Old pipe is a strong candidate for trenchless rehabilitation because lining or bursting deals with the whole run at once instead of patching it piece by piece.
Cast iron rusts and scales inside, clay cracks and separates at the joints, and Orangeburg pipe flattens and collapses.
Which trenchless methods does Done-Rite use?
Done-Rite uses two trenchless methods: pipe lining (cured-in-place pipe, or CIPP) for pipe that's mostly intact, and pipe bursting for pipe that's badly collapsed or heavily damaged.
- Pipe lining (CIPP): If the existing pipe has cracks, leaks or root intrusion but is mostly intact, we clean it with hydro jetting, insert a flexible, resin-coated liner, inflate it, and let it cure into a new, seamless pipe inside the old one.
- Pipe bursting: For badly collapsed or heavily damaged pipe, we pull a new high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe through the old one while breaking the old pipe outward.
Our guide to trenchless sewer repair explained walks through both methods, and our comparison of trenchless vs traditional sewer repair shows how they differ from digging.
What happens during a trenchless sewer repair?
A Done-Rite trenchless repair starts with a camera inspection, uses one or two small access points, and ends with a second camera inspection to confirm the new pipe is sound.
- Camera inspection: We feed a high-resolution camera into the line and show you the live footage while we explain what we see. A video camera inspection pinpoints the exact location and type of damage without digging.
- Choose the method: We go over the best trenchless option for your situation.
- Open small access points: Trenchless repair generally needs only one or two small access points at the ends of the damaged section. That keeps the landscaping and driveway intact.
- Repair the pipe: We line or burst the pipe, keeping the property as clean and undisturbed as we can and explaining each step as we go.
- Confirm and restore: We run another camera inspection to confirm the new pipe is sound, backfill the access points and clean up.
Done-Rite pulls the permit when one is required, and trenchless repair labor carries a minimum 1-year warranty.
What if the line needs cleaning first?
A drain cleaning or hydro jetting is often needed before trenchless repair to clear temporary blockages, so the camera can show the true condition of the pipe.
If persistent problems or significant damage show up, the camera inspection tells us whether trenchless repair is the right long-term fix. Done-Rite offers a full range of sewer and drain services to keep the system running properly.

Sewer Line Services questions
Multiple fixtures backing up at once, gurgling toilets, sewage smell in the yard, or a patch of unusually green lawn are the common signs. A camera inspection confirms it in minutes and shows you the break on screen.
Trenchless methods replace or line the sewer lateral through small access pits instead of digging a trench the length of your yard. When the pipe's condition allows it, you keep your driveway, hardscape and landscaping intact.
It depends on the job. Difficulty and difficulty of access drive the decision, and the location of the break makes a big impact as well. It varies job to job.
Yes, sewer line replacement usually needs a permit. When a permit is required, we pull it.
Often, yes. If the rest of the lateral is sound, a spot repair is the honest fix and we'll say so. Full replacement is for pipe that's collapsed, back-pitched, or failing along its length.
