What is water heater replacement?
Water heater replacement removes a failing water heater and installs a new tank or tankless unit sized to your home. Done-Rite Plumbing & Rooter replaces water heaters across Orange County.
Are you getting hit with icy blasts instead of hot water, or spotting a puddle forming at the base of your water heater? Those are signs the unit may be failing and need to be replaced. Across Orange County, Done-Rite Plumbing & Rooter is ready to step in with reliable water heater replacement and get your comfort back.
What are the signs a water heater needs replacing?
The five main signs are no or inconsistent hot water, loud noises from the tank, a leak from the tank, rusty hot water and an old unit. Several signs together usually mean the heater's life is ending.
Ignoring the signs can lead to bigger, more expensive problems, including water damage.
Why is my hot water gone or inconsistent?
No hot water, or a brief burst of warmth before it goes cold, usually points to a failed heating element in an electric unit, a pilot or burner problem in a gas unit, or a bad thermostat.
Beyond the discomfort, a heater that's struggling wastes energy every time it tries to keep up.
What do loud noises from the tank mean?
Rumbling and popping usually mean a layer of sediment on the tank bottom is trapping water that boils and bursts through it. Whistling or hissing can mean a restricted valve or fitting, or a small leak turning to steam.
Noise means the unit is working harder than it should, and that shortens its life.
What does a leak at the base of the heater mean?
A leak from the tank itself means the metal has corroded through from age or internal rust. A tank leak only gets worse, and any leak can lead to water damage and mold.
You may find a puddle at the bottom of the heater, or rust stains and corrosion on the outside of the tank.
What does rusty hot water mean?
Rusty or brown hot water, or a metallic smell, is a strong sign the inside of the tank is corroding and the sacrificial anode rod has worn out.
Rusty hot water also means the tank's structure is weakening, which is why it is one of the clearer signs that replacement is near.
How old is too old for a water heater?
A conventional tank water heater typically lasts 10 to 12 years. Past that point, parts wear out, efficiency drops and the chance of a sudden failure rises every year.
If you can't remember the last time the heater was replaced, check the label. An old heater that's already showing other symptoms is a strong candidate for replacement.
Why do water heaters fail?
Water heaters usually fail from a combination of age and wear, sediment from hard water, internal corrosion after the anode rod is used up, and occasionally a faulty part or factory defect.
Knowing why a water heater is giving up helps you make a confident decision about replacement. The cause is rarely one simple thing.
How does age wear out a water heater?
Constant heating and cooling cycles, changes in internal pressure and the sheer volume of water a heater processes over the years wear out its parts and stress the tank.
Once a unit reaches the end of its expected life, even minor repairs often aren't worth the money, and a full replacement is the more reliable choice.
How does hard water sediment shorten a heater's life?
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. Over years of use, those minerals settle out and form an insulating layer of sediment on the bottom of the tank.
Sediment makes the burner or heating elements less effective, forces the unit to work harder and leads to early tank failure.
What happens when the anode rod is used up?
When the sacrificial anode rod is used up, the steel tank is exposed to the corrosive effects of water. Pinhole leaks and eventual failure follow.
Once significant internal corrosion has set in, the tank can't be trusted, and replacement is the only safe, lasting fix.
Can a defective part cause early failure?
Yes. A defective thermostat, heating element or pressure relief valve, or a flaw in the tank's welds from the factory, can cause a sudden, unexpected failure. Early failure is less common.
If the problem is the tank itself, or several parts are failing on a unit nearing the end of its life, replacement is the more reliable long-term answer.
What does a new water heater cost from Done-Rite?
A Bradford White tank water heater installs for $2,300 to $3,200. A Navien, Noritz or Rinnai tankless unit installs for $4,000 to $6,000. Done-Rite gives upfront pricing before any work starts.
Financing is available with terms up to 10 years, and we take $100 off any replacement when we supply the material. Our guide to what a water heater costs breaks the numbers down, and our page on Bradford White water heaters covers the tank brand we install.
What happens during a Done-Rite replacement visit?
A Done-Rite technician confirms how far the failure has gone, helps you choose tank or tankless, gives you the price, then removes the old unit and installs, tests and explains the new one. There is no trip charge.
First, we talk through whether a traditional tank or a tankless unit is the better fit for your home and how you use hot water, including efficiency and space considerations. Once you've decided, we get to work:
- Shut off and drain: We shut off the water and the gas or electricity to the old unit, drain the tank and disconnect it.
- Remove: We remove the old heater and dispose of it properly.
- Install: We set the new unit, connect the water, fuel and venting, and pull the permit when one is required.
- Test: We fill the new tank, check carefully for leaks and test that it's heating correctly.
- Walk-through: We show you how to operate and maintain the new heater.
Our labor carries a 1 year minimum warranty. Our goal is a smooth, low-stress process that gets your hot water back quickly.
What are the alternatives to replacing a water heater?
If your heater is newer and the trouble is a single failed part, water heater repair service may be the better choice. A $150 water heater tune-up each year helps a healthy unit last longer.
If you're ready for an upgrade, tankless water heater installation gives you endless hot water in a smaller footprint.
Why is it worth replacing a failing heater early?
A water heater that's on its way out costs more to run every month, and a failing tank can release a lot of water onto floors and into walls. Replacing it early lets you plan the job on your schedule.
