//Quick answer
- Sediment is the thing that shortens a tank's life and wastes gas.
- $150 flat, no trip charge.
- A tune-up is also the honest way to learn whether to plan a replacement.
01Definition
What is done during a tune-up?
The tank is drained enough to flush the sediment that has settled on the bottom. The anode rod is checked for remaining life. The temperature and pressure relief valve is tested and its drain line checked. Gas and water connections, the venting and the burner or elements are inspected, and the thermostat setting is confirmed. On a tankless unit, the equivalent is a descaling flush through the isolation valves.
Why does sediment matter so much?
Minerals from the water settle as a layer on the tank bottom. On a gas unit that layer sits between the burner and the water, so the burner runs longer to heat the same water and the steel overheats. That is the rumbling you hear. It wastes fuel, slows recovery and shortens the tank's life.
02When it applies
When is a tune-up worth doing?
On a unit you intend to keep: a tank with years left, a tankless unit that has never been descaled, or any water heater that has started to rumble or recover slowly. Harder water means more frequent flushing.
When is it too late for a tune-up?
When the tank is already leaking or the water is rusty from tank corrosion. Flushing a failing tank does not extend it, and the technician will say so rather than sell the tune-up. Replacement is $2,300 to $3,200 installed.
03What goes wrong
What does skipping maintenance cost?
An early replacement, usually. A consumed anode rod and a thick sediment layer are the two most common reasons a tank dies before its time, and both are inexpensive to address on a visit. Skipping them trades a $150 visit for a $2,300 to $3,200 replacement sooner than necessary.

Common questions
$150 flat per unit, with no trip charge.
If the rust is from a spent anode rod, replacing it can help. If the tank itself is corroding, no; that unit is at the end of its life and the tune-up will not change it.
