//Glossary
Tankless water heater
A water heater that heats water on demand as it flows through a heat exchanger, with no storage tank. It supplies hot water continuously at its rated flow, and its size is chosen by the number of fixtures that may run at once.
What does a tankless install involve?
Gas supply sized for a much larger burner than a tank, venting suited to the unit, a condensate drain on condensing models, and the water connections. Those requirements are why the installed price sits well above a tank swap, and why the job usually involves a permit.
Does a tankless need maintenance?
Yes. Scale builds up inside the heat exchanger, so periodic descaling (a flush) keeps flow and efficiency up. Skipping it is the common cause of early trouble.
