What is a water softener?
A water softener is a whole-home system that swaps the calcium and magnesium in hard water for sodium or potassium ions, so the water reaching your fixtures is soft. Done-Rite Plumbing & Rooter installs water softeners across Orange County.
Scrubbing mineral buildup off faucets and shower doors, dry, itchy skin after every shower, or an old softener that has finally given up are clear signs your home could use a proper water softener to protect your plumbing, appliances and comfort. Done-Rite Plumbing & Rooter is ready to get your water soft, clean and problem-free.
How do I know if I need a water softener?
The five main signs you need a water softener are soap scum and scale, dry skin and dull hair, dingy laundry, falling water pressure, and appliances that break down or use more energy than they should.
What is the white crust on my faucets and shower doors?
The white, chalky crust on showerheads, faucets, glass shower doors and sinks is mineral scale, mainly calcium and magnesium, that sticks to surfaces and builds up over time.
Dishes can come out of the dishwasher spotted or with a cloudy film, even after a full cycle. Scale also restricts water flow and reduces appliance efficiency.
Can hard water cause dry skin and dull hair?
Yes. Hard water minerals react with soap to form a sticky curd that doesn't rinse away cleanly. The film clings to skin and hair, blocks natural oils and leaves you uncomfortable.
Your skin may feel dry, tight or irritated no matter how much moisturizer you use, your hair may feel limp or dull, and shampoo won't lather well.
Why does laundry come out dingy and stiff?
Hard water minerals keep detergent from dissolving fully and settle into the fibers, which dulls colors, turns whites yellow and wears fabric out faster.
Clothes look faded right out of the wash, and fabrics feel stiff or scratchy.
Can hard water lower water pressure?
Yes. As hard water moves through the pipes, minerals settle on the walls and slowly narrow the opening, just like plaque in an artery.
The narrowing shows up first at small openings like showerheads and aerators, then in the pipes themselves. Heavy buildup can lead to costly blockages or the need for repiping.
How does hard water affect appliances?
Hard water minerals build up inside water heaters, dishwashers and washing machines and force them to work harder and use more energy, which shortens their life.
You may see more repairs than expected, or energy bills that climb for no clear reason.
What makes water hard?
Water becomes hard when it picks up dissolved calcium and magnesium as it moves through soil and rock. The more of those minerals it carries, the harder it is.
Why treat hard water where it enters the home?
You can't change the source water, so treating it at the point where it enters your home with a whole-home water softener is the most effective answer.
Our guide to hard water and water treatment basics explains how softening works in more detail.
Can an older plumbing system have scale problems?
Yes. Even if the water wasn't especially hard when a home was built, years of mineral deposits can shrink the inside of the pipes and damage fixtures.
A new water softener stops further buildup. In severe cases, repiping may be needed alongside the softener to restore full flow.
How long does a water softener last?
A water softener usually lasts 10 to 15 years. An old, inefficient or wrongly sized softener won't remove minerals effectively.
Many homes were built without a water softener. If you don't have one, installation is the clear path. If you have an old one, it's time for an upgrade that's sized for your household's water use and hardness level.
How does Done-Rite install a water softener?
Done-Rite installs a water softener in five steps: test the water hardness, recommend a correctly sized system, install it on the main line, test the result, then show you how to maintain it.
- Test the water: Our technician performs a water hardness test, a precise measurement of your water's mineral content that we need to size the right softener. We also talk through your household's water use, the number of people in the home and any specific concerns you have.
- Recommend a system: We explain the different types of softener, their benefits, and how each option handles your hard water, so you understand the plan before we move forward. You get clear, upfront information, not pushy sales tactics.
- Install: Our plumber connects the new softener to the main water line near where water enters the house, often in the garage or a utility area. We make sure every connection is secure and sealed to prevent leaks, and we set the regeneration cycle to match your water use and hardness level. We pull the permit when one is required.
- Test: We test the new system to confirm it's working correctly and that the hardness level has dropped.
- Show you how: We walk you through how to operate and maintain the softener, including refilling salt and any programming, so you feel confident managing it.
What pairs well with a water softener?
A Whole-Home Water Filtration system removes chlorine, sediment and other contaminants that a softener doesn't address, and a Reverse Osmosis Installation adds purified drinking water at a dedicated tap.
A water softener is a big step toward better water, but it's often part of a broader plan for home water quality. Many homeowners find that pairing a softener with other water treatment gives the best results.
What changes after a water softener is installed?
Soft water means cleaner dishes, brighter laundry, softer skin and longer-lasting appliances, with far less soap scum and mineral buildup to scrub away.
Hard water keeps damaging appliances, irritating skin and making everyday chores harder until it's treated.

Water Treatment questions
A softener handles hardness and scale for the whole house. Whole-home filtration handles sediment, chlorine and taste at the main. Reverse osmosis polishes drinking water at one tap. Many homes end up with a softener plus RO at the kitchen sink.
We offer water testing, and we'll recommend equipment based on the result. Sometimes the answer is that you don't need anything.
