Hard water and water treatment basics: test first, then choose

Water treatment starts with a test. Hardness scales fixtures and water heaters and is a softener's job; sediment, chlorine and taste are filtration's job; drinking-water polish is reverse osmosis at one tap.

//Quick answer

  • Softener: hardness and scale, whole house.
  • Filtration: sediment, chlorine, taste and odor, whole house.
  • Reverse osmosis: drinking water at one faucet.
  • Test first; sometimes the answer is that you do not need anything.

01Definition

What does hard water do to a house?

Dissolved calcium and magnesium leave scale on fixtures, shower glass and inside water heaters. In a tank it settles as sediment; in a tankless unit it coats the heat exchanger. Both make the heater work harder and fail sooner. Soap works less well, and spots show on everything that dries.

What does a water test measure?

Hardness first, then the things that shape the recommendation: chlorine, sediment, pH and total dissolved solids. The result decides whether the problem is hardness (softener), particles and taste (filtration), drinking-water quality (reverse osmosis), or a combination. Guessing from a spot on a glass gets the wrong equipment.

02When it applies

When is a softener the answer?

Scale on fixtures, a water heater that rumbles or scales up early, and a test that confirms hardness. A softener removes the hardness minerals at the main line with an ion-exchange resin bed, so every fixture in the house benefits. It does not filter.

When is filtration or reverse osmosis the answer?

Chlorine smell, sediment, taste or odor is a whole-home filtration problem. Drinking and cooking water quality is a reverse osmosis problem, solved at one dedicated tap. Many homes end up with a softener plus RO at the kitchen sink; that is the pairing the water test usually points to when both problems are present.

03What goes wrong

What goes wrong when equipment is sold before the test?

A softener installed for a taste complaint, or a filter installed for a scale complaint. The customer paid for a system that does not touch the problem. Testing first is what makes the recommendation defensible, including when the recommendation is nothing.
