What is garbage disposal installation?
Garbage disposal installation is removing a failed disposal and mounting, connecting and testing a new unit under the kitchen sink. Done-Rite Plumbing & Rooter installs new garbage disposals for homeowners across Orange County.
Is your garbage disposal dead, humming without grinding, or leaking under the sink? Those are clear signs the unit has failed and needs a professional look. Done-Rite will tell you honestly whether a repair or a new unit makes more sense.
How do I know my garbage disposal needs replacing?
The five signs that a garbage disposal may need replacing are humming without grinding, leaks from the unit, odors that won't go away, frequent clogs and a unit that won't turn on at all.
Some disposal problems can be fixed. Others mean the unit is at the end of its life. Done-Rite looks for these signs when deciding whether it's time for a new one.
Why does my disposal hum but not grind?
A humming disposal that won't grind has power at the motor, but the grinding plate is jammed or failing. Turn it off and have it checked.
Sometimes the unit trips the breaker right away instead. Running a humming disposal can burn out the motor for good and leave your sink clogged.
What does a leak under the disposal mean?
A leak from the body of a garbage disposal usually means a cracked housing or worn internal seals. Those parts often can't be replaced on their own.
You may find puddles in the cabinet under the disposal, or water dripping from the unit while it runs. Even a small leak can soak the cabinet floor, grow mold and lead to bigger repairs.
Why does my disposal keep smelling bad?
A lasting disposal odor means food is trapped and rotting in the grinding chamber or drain line. A worn disposal may not clear waste fully, so the buildup keeps growing.
The smell often comes back after citrus peels and ice, and it's usually worse after you use the sink.
Why does the sink clog after I run the disposal?
A sink that backs up after the disposal runs usually has worn grinding parts that send bigger food chunks into the pipes, or a weak motor that can't clear the chamber.
Frequent clogs strain the whole drain system and can lead to larger drain line blockages.
Why won't my garbage disposal turn on?
A silent disposal may have a simple cause, like a tripped breaker or a reset button that popped. If those check out, the motor may have failed.
A failed motor is more common in older units and usually means replacement.
Why do garbage disposals fail?
The four most common causes of garbage disposal failure are age and wear, improper use and blockages, electrical issues, and corrosion. Knowing the cause helps you decide between a repair and a new unit.
Do garbage disposals wear out with age?
Yes. Garbage disposals aren't built to last forever. Over time, the grinding parts wear down, the motor windings weaken and the internal seals break down.
Hard water can speed up that wear by leaving mineral scale on moving parts. For an older unit with more than one problem, replacement is usually the more reliable choice.
What foods can break a garbage disposal?
Fibrous vegetables like celery, starchy foods like pasta and potato peels, coffee grounds, eggshells, fruit pits and grease can jam the grinding plate or harden in the drain.
Many disposals fail because of what goes into them. If repeated jams have damaged the motor or grinding chamber, a new installation is usually the fix. Our kitchen plumbing guide covers more habits that keep the sink drain healthy.
Can an electrical problem stop a disposal?
Yes. A disposal problem can be electrical, not mechanical: a tripped breaker, a bad wall switch or loose wiring. A seized motor in an older unit can also trip the circuit.
Simple resets are easy, but if the disposal itself is the source of the electrical fault, the unit should be replaced for safety.
How does corrosion ruin a garbage disposal?
Constant contact with water and acidic food waste can rust and corrode the grinding parts and housing inside a disposal. Once corrosion weakens the unit, a new one is the only lasting fix.
Corrosion happens faster when the disposal sits unused and moisture stays inside.
How does Done-Rite install a new garbage disposal?
Done-Rite offers a 1-hour response and no trip charge for garbage disposal installation. The plumber confirms a new unit is the right call, removes the old one, installs and tests the new one, then cleans up.
- Check the setup: We look at your current setup and confirm that a new unit is the right call.
- Choose the unit: We go over your options, like motor size and build quality, so you can pick the right fit for your household and budget.
- Remove the old disposal: We shut off power and water, detach the unit and clean the sink flange area. We protect your cabinet and the space around it from drips and debris while we work.
- Install the new disposal: We mount it to your sink, connect it to the drain and the electrical supply, and seal every connection to prevent leaks.
- Test and clean up: We run water and test the unit to make sure it runs smoothly and quietly. Before we leave, we clean up and share a few tips on caring for your new disposal.
Done-Rite backs its garbage disposal installation labor with a 1-year minimum warranty.
What if the problem is more than the disposal?
If the sink clogged or drained slowly before the disposal failed, the blockage may be further down the drain line. Professional Drain Cleaning can clear what has built up over time.
If your disposal is only jammed or has a minor issue, our Garbage Disposal Repair service may be a simpler and more affordable choice than a full replacement.

Drain Cleaning & Rooter questions
$99 to $350, and the $99 service includes a camera inspection. The $99 price covers one qualifying drain with exterior, ground-level cleanout access, and excludes yard drains. Lines that need more than a snake fall in the rest of the range.
Snaking punches through a clog and gets flow back fast. It's the right call for a single stoppage, starting at $99. Hydro jetting ($650 to $850) scours the full diameter of the pipe and is the right call when grease or roots keep coming back. We'll tell you which one your line actually needs after we look.
A drain that clogs on a schedule usually has a cause the cable never removed: a belly in the line, root intrusion, a broken fitting, or heavy grease build-up. That's exactly what the camera inspection is for: we find the reason instead of selling you the same snaking every six months.
We don't recommend them. Caustic drain openers sit against the pipe wall, damage older cast-iron and ABS, and rarely clear a real blockage. They just move the problem down the line and make it more dangerous to work on.
