What is professional drain cleaning?
Professional drain cleaning removes the clog inside a drain line with a plumbing auger or high-pressure water, so water flows freely again. Done-Rite Plumbing & Rooter provides drain cleaning across Orange County.
Is your kitchen sink backing up with murky water, your shower pooling around your ankles, or your toilet gurgling every time you flush? Those aren't just minor annoyances. They're clear signs of a drain problem that needs a plumber's attention before it gets worse.
What are the warning signs that a drain needs cleaning?
The four main warning signs are slow drains, clogs that keep coming back, foul odors and gurgling sounds. Spotting them early can save you from a bigger, messier headache later.
Why is my drain slow?
A slow drain is a classic sign of a partial blockage. Hair, soap scum, grease and food bits cling to the inside of the pipe and slowly narrow the path for water.
Water takes too long to go down the sink, shower or tub, and you might hear a gurgle as it slowly drains away.
What does a recurring clog mean?
A clog that comes back after plungers or store-bought cleaners usually means the blockage was never fully removed, or there's a bigger problem like a damaged pipe or tree roots in the sewer line.
A clog that keeps coming back needs a proper diagnosis and a more thorough cleaning than DIY tools can give.
Why does my drain smell bad?
A sewage or rotten-egg smell from a drain usually comes from food waste, grease, hair and bacteria breaking down inside the drain line or P-trap.
In more serious cases, a smell from the main sewer line can mean a clog is letting sewer gas escape into your home. A drain odor is a warning, not just an annoyance.
Why does my drain gurgle?
Gurgling comes from air trapped in the plumbing, usually because a partial blockage is getting in the way of normal airflow. When you hear it, a full blockage is often on its way.
The sound is most common when water is running somewhere else in the house. Water squeezing past the clog pulls air through the nearest drain opening.
What causes clogged drains?
The five most common causes of clogged drains are hair and soap scum, fats, oils and grease, foreign objects, tree roots and hard water scale. Knowing the cause helps pick the right way to clear it.
How do hair and soap clog a bathroom drain?
Hair strands mix with sticky soap scum, shampoo residue and small items like dental floss or cotton swabs to form a dense mass that sticks to the pipe wall until the drain stops.
Hair and soap are the biggest troublemakers in bathroom drains. Our plumbers use augers made to cut through and pull out these stringy clogs so the pipe is cleared all the way.
Why shouldn't grease go down the kitchen sink?
Grease is liquid when it's hot, but it cools fast in the pipe and hardens into a waxy coating. That sticky layer catches food bits, coffee grounds and other debris until it builds into a serious blockage.
Cooking oil, bacon grease and fatty food scraps are the usual sources. Plumbers call this group fats, oils and grease, or FOG.
Which objects commonly block drains?
Kids' toys, "flushable" wipes, feminine hygiene products and paper towels are common drain blockers. None of them dissolve, so they quickly form a barrier in the pipe.
"Flushable" wipes rarely break down. Finding the object, often with a camera inspection, lets us remove it safely without damaging your plumbing.
How do tree roots block a drain line?
Roots enter underground pipes through a tiny crack or a loose joint, then grow into thick networks that catch waste and can block the whole line.
Snaking can give short-term relief, but a camera inspection followed by hydro jetting or a spot repair is often needed for a lasting fix.
Can hard water scale clog pipes?
Yes. Hard water carries dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium. Over the years, those minerals settle inside the pipe as a hard, crusty scale that shrinks the opening and catches debris.
Snaking can clear the debris, but hydro jetting is often the better way to strip away scale and restore the full width of the pipe.
What happens during a Done-Rite drain cleaning visit?
A Done-Rite drain cleaning visit starts with a 1-hour response and no trip charge. The plumber listens, checks the drain, finds the cause, explains the fix and clears the line.
- Listen and check: We start by listening to what you've noticed, then check the affected drain and the plumbing around it.
- See the clog: Our $99 drain snaking includes a camera inspection on one qualifying drain with an exterior ground-level cleanout. The camera shows exactly where the clog is and what it's made of, whether that's hair, grease, a foreign object or tree roots.
- Explain the fix: We explain what we found, recommend the fix that makes the most sense and give you clear pricing before any work starts.
- Clear the line: For typical clogs, we feed a plumbing auger, often called a "snake," into the drain until its cutting head reaches the clog and breaks it up.
- Leave it flowing: The goal isn't just to clear the clog. It's to leave your drains flowing freely when we're done.
Our guide to how drain cleaning works walks through each step in more detail.
When does a drain need hydro jetting instead of a snake?
Hydro jetting is the better choice for heavy grease, thick buildup or hard water scale. High-pressure water scrubs the pipe walls clean and removes buildup a snake can leave behind.
We'll walk you through your options so you can make the call that's right for your home. What drain cleaning costs is laid out in plain numbers in our comparison guide.
Which related services handle tougher drain problems?
For the hardest clogs and a full pipe scrub, Done-Rite provides hydro jet drain cleaning. For blockages in the main sewer line, including tree roots, Done-Rite provides sewer and main line cleaning.
Drain cleaning fixes most everyday blockages, but a problem that keeps coming back can point to something bigger in your plumbing system. A main line problem affects drainage for the whole house, so it needs the deeper service.
Why is a blocked drain worth fixing quickly?
A blocked drain can lead to unsanitary conditions, water damage and stress for your household. Plungers and harsh chemical cleaners often give only short-term relief, and some chemicals can even damage pipes.
A plumber removes the whole blockage and finds the cause. If your drains are backing up, gurgling or giving off bad smells, it's a good time to call a plumber.

Drain Cleaning & Rooter questions
$99 to $350, and the $99 service includes a camera inspection. The $99 price covers one qualifying drain with exterior, ground-level cleanout access, and excludes yard drains. Lines that need more than a snake fall in the rest of the range.
Snaking punches through a clog and gets flow back fast. It's the right call for a single stoppage, starting at $99. Hydro jetting ($650 to $850) scours the full diameter of the pipe and is the right call when grease or roots keep coming back. We'll tell you which one your line actually needs after we look.
A drain that clogs on a schedule usually has a cause the cable never removed: a belly in the line, root intrusion, a broken fitting, or heavy grease build-up. That's exactly what the camera inspection is for: we find the reason instead of selling you the same snaking every six months.
We don't recommend them. Caustic drain openers sit against the pipe wall, damage older cast-iron and ABS, and rarely clear a real blockage. They just move the problem down the line and make it more dangerous to work on.
