Hydro jetting, explained: what it is and when a drain needs it

Hydro jetting cleans a drain or sewer line with a high-pressure water nozzle that scours grease, scale and roots off the whole pipe wall. Done-Rite charges $650 to $850 per line.

//Quick answer

  • Snaking punches through; jetting cleans the pipe wall.
  • Best for grease, scale, sludge and recurring root growth.
  • $650 to $850 per line, no trip charge.
  • Camera first: jetting a broken pipe is not a fix.

01Definition

How does a hydro jetter work?

A pump pushes water through a hose to a nozzle sized for the pipe. Rear-facing jets pull the nozzle up the line and flush debris back toward the cleanout; forward jets cut the blockage ahead. The technician works the nozzle the length of the line and back, and the return flow carries out what came off the walls.

What does jetting remove that a cable does not?

The coating. Years of kitchen grease, scale from hard water, sludge in a low-slope line, and root fibers that a cutting head trims but does not clear. A cable leaves most of that in place around the hole it made. A jetter returns the pipe to close to its full diameter.

02When it applies

When is jetting the right choice?

A line that keeps clogging, a kitchen line coated in grease, a main line with recurring root growth, or a commercial drain that runs heavy every day. The camera confirms the pipe is sound enough to jet and shows the result afterward.

When is snaking still the better answer?

A one-off clog with cleanout access. Snaking is faster, starts at $99 with the camera included, and is the honest recommendation for a single stoppage. Jetting a drain that did not need it is spending $650 to solve a $99 problem.

03What goes wrong

Can jetting hurt the pipe?

A sound pipe, no; nozzle and pressure are matched to the material and size. A cracked or collapsed pipe is a different case: no cleaning method fixes it, and forcing water through it moves the problem. This is why the camera goes down first.

What about the roots coming back?

Jetting clears the growth but not the opening it came through. If the joint is otherwise sound, periodic jetting is a reasonable plan. If the pipe is displaced at the entry point, a spot repair is the real fix.

04Proof

  • A camera goes down the line before anyone quotes a drain or sewer repair, and the camera inspection is included with the $99 drain snaking.
  • Parwiz Siaghani, Google, September 14, 2026: "Had roots in our toilet. Logan diagnosed the issue right away and scheduled a repair appointment in a very speedy manner."
  • 4.9 stars across 1,720+ Google reviews on the Orange profile, checked September 17, 2026.
  • No trip charge, a 1-hour response time, and 24/7 emergency service.
  • 1 year minimum warranty on labor. Manufacturer warranty handling varies by manufacturer.
