//Glossary
Pressure regulator (PRV)
A valve on the main water line that reduces the utility's street pressure to a safe pressure for the house. When it fails, pressure can climb high enough to stress every fixture, appliance and pipe joint in the building.
What are the signs of a failed regulator?
Banging pipes, faucets that spit or hammer, a relief valve on the water heater that keeps discharging, or pressure that swings between too high and too low. A gauge on a hose bib takes the guesswork out.

Pressure regulator work is part of Done-Rite's outdoor plumbing repair service, and a 2019 Google review describes the crew installing one at a customer's water meter.
