//Quick answer
- A wet patch in the yard with no rain is a yard line or irrigation break.
- The regulator and main shutoff usually live outside; know where.
- Yard drains are excluded from the $99 drain offer.
- Gas to an outdoor kitchen or fire pit is sized, permitted and tested work.
01Definition
What counts as outdoor plumbing?
The supply from the meter to the house, the main shutoff and pressure regulator, hose bibs and their vacuum breakers, the tie-in that feeds irrigation, exterior yard and area drains, the sewer lateral's exterior cleanout, and gas piping to pool heaters, fire pits, BBQ islands and outdoor kitchens.
What goes wrong outside?
Hose bibs that drip or spray at the stem, a soggy patch or a spinning meter from a yard line break, low or hammering pressure from a failed regulator, area drains that back up in the first rain, and gas lines that were never sized for the appliance on them.
02When it applies
When is it a leak call?
A wet patch with no rain, a meter that moves with everything off, or a pressure drop with no other cause. Locating a yard line break is a leak detection job; digging in the wrong place is a landscaping job.
When is it a repair or replacement call?
Hose bibs, regulators, main shutoff valves and yard line breaks are all outdoor plumbing repair. Exterior drains are drain cleaning, with the note that yard drains are excluded from the $99 offer. Gas to an outdoor appliance is gas line installation, usually permitted.
03What goes wrong
What does a failed regulator do to the whole house?
It lets street pressure into every pipe, fixture and appliance. Banging, spitting faucets, a relief valve that keeps discharging, and shortened life on everything. A gauge on a hose bib takes the guesswork out, and the regulator is one of the highest-value small repairs on a house.
