//Glossary
Authority having jurisdiction (AHJ)
The agency with legal authority over building work at a given address: for most homes in the service area, the city's building department; for unincorporated pockets, the county. The AHJ decides what needs a permit, what edition of the code applies, and what the inspector checks.
How do I find my AHJ?
Check which city limits your address falls inside, not the mailing city on the envelope; they are not always the same. The city's building or community development department is the AHJ for a plumbing permit. Confirm current requirements with them before relying on anything general.
