Pressure test
Isolating a section of water or gas piping, pressurizing it, and watching a gauge to see whether the pressure holds. A drop means the section is losing water or gas somewhere.
Why test before repairing?
It tells you which line is leaking before anything is opened, and it proves the repair afterward. On gas piping the test is also what the utility and the inspector rely on to confirm the system is tight.
