//Quick answer
- One slow drain is local. Several slow drains, or the lowest one first, is the lateral.
- Gurgling and recurring clogs are the early warnings; a backup is the late one.
- A camera inspection tells you whether it is a clog or a broken line, and it is free.
01Definition
Which signs point to the sewer line?
Slow drains throughout the house, not just one. Gurgling from a toilet or tub when a sink or washer drains. Clogs that return within weeks of being cleared. A sewer smell indoors or in the yard, which means the line is no longer sealed. A patch of lawn that is greener, softer or wetter than the rest, over the run of the pipe. Sewage backing up at the lowest fixture, usually a tub, shower or floor drain.
Why do the lowest fixtures show it first?
Everything in the house drains through the lateral. When it restricts, the water has to go somewhere, and the lowest opening is the first place it appears. That is why a ground-floor tub gurgles or fills while the upstairs still drains.
02When it applies
When is it a clog and when is it damage?
A clog clears with a cable or jetter and stays clear. Damage comes back: roots regrow from the same joint, a belly refills with debris, a crack keeps letting soil in. If the same line has been cleaned more than once in a year, treat it as damage until the camera says otherwise.
What should you do first?
Stop running water if sewage is backing up. Do not pour chemical drain opener into a line that may be broken; it sits in the pipe and makes the work dangerous. Call for main line cleaning with a camera, $99 to $350, and get the picture before anything is quoted.
03What goes wrong
What does waiting cost?
The backup. Sewage at the lowest fixture is the expensive version of the same restriction, and it arrives at the worst time. Sewer main work concentrates in winter, so a line that is warning in the fall is worth looking at before the rains.
04Proof
- A camera goes down the line before anyone quotes a drain or sewer repair, and the camera inspection is included with the $99 drain snaking.
- Parwiz Siaghani, Google, September 14, 2026: "Had roots in our toilet. Logan diagnosed the issue right away and scheduled a repair appointment in a very speedy manner."
- No trip charge, a 1-hour response time, and 24/7 emergency service.

Common questions
A clog clears and stays clear. A broken line brings the same symptoms back, adds sewer smell or a wet patch in the yard, and shows the break on camera.
It affects everything that drains. Supply lines and the water heater are separate systems; a sewer problem shows up as drains, smells and backups, not as pressure or hot water.
A spot repair is usually a short job; a full replacement depends on the length of the line and whether it is trenchless or excavated. The technician gives the timeline with the quote.
