What a sewer camera inspection shows, and why it comes before the quote

A sewer camera inspection runs a camera through the lateral and shows the pipe on screen: roots, a belly, an offset joint, a crack, or a collapse. The picture decides the repair, not a guess.

//Quick answer

  • The camera shows the cause and the locator marks it on the surface.
  • Roots, bellies, offsets and breaks each have a different fix.
  • Done-Rite offers a free video inspection, and the camera is included with the $99 drain snaking.

01Definition

What does the camera actually see?

A waterproof camera on a push rod, fed through the cleanout, sends live video to a monitor. The technician watches the pipe wall, the joints and the water line as the camera advances, and a transmitter in the camera head lets a locator on the surface mark the exact spot above any problem, plus its depth.

What do the common problems look like?

Roots look like fine hairs at a joint or a dense mass filling the pipe. A belly is a stretch where the picture goes underwater and comes back out. An offset joint is a step where one pipe section no longer lines up with the next. A crack is a line along the wall; a collapse is a pipe that has lost its shape or is blocked by its own material.

02When it applies

When should you get a camera inspection?

After any main line backup, before approving anyone's sewer quote, before buying a house, and whenever a drain has stopped more than once. On a main line backup the camera is the difference between a $99 to $350 cleaning and a replacement quote you cannot check.

What happens after the inspection?

You get one of three answers: the line just needed cleaning; the line has one failed section and a spot repair fixes it; or the line is failing along its length and needs replacement, by excavation or, where conditions allow, a trenchless method. Each has a different price basis, and only the first two are quoted online.

03What goes wrong

What goes wrong without the inspection?

Sewer work quoted from the symptom alone. That is how a homeowner ends up replacing a lateral that needed one joint fixed, or cleaning a line that was already collapsed. The picture is the protection, which is why Done-Rite runs it before any sewer quote and shows you the screen.
