What does shower installation and repair cover?
Shower installation and repair fixes drips, leaks, temperature swings and broken handles, and installs new shower valves and fixtures. Done-Rite Plumbing & Rooter handles showers across Orange County.
A shower that drips after you turn it off, or a damp spot on the wall next to it, means something inside the valve or the pipes needs attention. A small leak is much easier to fix before it damages the wall. Done-Rite Plumbing & Rooter is ready to handle shower installation and repair and get your daily routine back on track.
What are the signs a shower needs repair?
The four main signs a shower needs repair are drips or leaks, swings in temperature or pressure, stiff or broken handles, and visible damage or mold around the shower.
Why does my showerhead drip when it's off?
A showerhead that drips when the handle is fully off usually has a worn cartridge or diverter inside the valve. Rubber seals and plastic parts break down over time and let water slip past.
Water may also collect around the base of the handles, or show up as a damp spot on the wall next to the shower or a stain on the ceiling below. Leaks behind the wall can come from a loose pipe connection, a cracked valve body or a failed seal around the shower arm. A steady drip also wastes water and adds to your water bill.
Why does my shower go hot or cold when someone flushes?
A shower that turns hot or cold when someone flushes a toilet or runs a faucet usually has a worn pressure-balancing or thermostatic valve.
A pressure-balancing or thermostatic valve is supposed to keep the temperature steady when pressure changes elsewhere in the house. When the valve fails, a sudden burst of hot water can scald, which is a real concern for children and older family members. A weak shower can come from a clogged showerhead, scale in the valve or problems in the supply pipes.
What does a stiff or loose shower handle mean?
A stiff shower handle usually means mineral deposits or corrosion have built up around the cartridge or stem. A loose handle often points to a stripped screw, a worn handle or a worn clip inside the valve.
Sometimes the handle spins without controlling the water, or breaks off in your hand, which can leave the shower unusable. When the handle doesn't work right, it's hard to control flow and temperature, and an exposed valve can let debris or water get inside.
What do cracked grout and mold around a shower mean?
Cracked grout or tile, stains on nearby walls or ceilings, and mold along the caulk lines can mean water is getting behind the wall from a leaking pipe or a failed shower pan liner.
Mold and stains are signs of ongoing moisture, often from a leak nobody noticed. Fixtures may also look corroded or crusted with mineral deposits. Mold can spread, so it's best to find and fix the water source early.
What causes shower problems?
The four most common causes of shower problems are hard water mineral buildup, worn valve parts, aging pipes and fixtures, and mistakes in the original installation or a past repair.
How does hard water affect a shower?
Hard water carries dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium that leave limescale inside showerheads, faucet cartridges and mixing valves. Scale clogs spray holes and makes moving parts stick.
Scale leads to low pressure and trouble controlling temperature. For showerheads, cleaning off the scale or replacing the head is often enough. For parts inside the valve, we take the faucet apart, clean or replace the cartridge or stem and check the seals. With older fixtures that are badly corroded, replacing the whole valve may be the most reliable fix. Our guide to hard water and water treatment basics explains where scale comes from.
Which parts inside a shower valve wear out?
Shower valves contain rubber seals, O-rings, plastic cartridges and metal parts. Water, temperature changes and daily use make those parts wear down, crack or harden over the years.
Worn valve parts lead to drips, leaks and uneven performance. The repair starts with finding the exact part that failed, whether it's a cartridge, a diverter or a seal. We shut off the water, take the valve apart carefully, replace the worn part with a compatible one and put it back together. Then we test it for leaks and smooth operation.
Can old pipes cause shower problems?
Yes. Galvanized steel pipes can rust inside over time, and the rust and scale can choke off water flow to the shower. Older brass or copper fixtures can corrode or simply wear out.
Depending on how much has aged, the fix can be as simple as replacing one fixture or as involved as replacing the supply lines to the shower. If corrosion is widespread in the home's water lines, a whole house repipe may be the more cost-effective long-term answer.
Can a bad installation cause a shower leak?
Yes. Poorly made pipe connections, a badly sealed shower pan liner or a valve that wasn't installed correctly can cause leaks right away or soon after.
The wrong replacement part, or overtightening a fitting, can also cause damage. Fixing an installation problem starts with a careful inspection to find the fault. Sometimes that means opening a section of wall to reach the pipes and valve. Getting every part installed correctly is what makes the shower reliable for the long run.
What happens during a Done-Rite shower visit?
A Done-Rite shower visit follows four steps: listen and inspect, explain the cause with upfront pricing, do the repair or installation, then test the shower and clean up.
- Listen and inspect: We listen to what you've noticed, then check the showerhead, the handles, the valve behind the wall where we can reach it and any visible piping for leaks, corrosion or damage. We also check water pressure and temperature to pin down the cause, whether it's a worn cartridge, a clogged showerhead or a pipe problem.
- Explain: We explain the cause in plain language, go over your repair or replacement options and give you the price before any work begins.
- Repair or install: For a new installation, we help you choose a fixture that fits your needs and budget. We work with Moen and Kohler fixtures and can talk through the options with you. We protect your bathroom while we work.
- Test and clean up: Before we leave, we test the shower to make sure it runs well, holds temperature and doesn't leak, and we clean up when the job is done.
Done-Rite shower labor comes with a 1 year minimum warranty. Our bathroom plumbing guide shows how the shower connects to the rest of the room's plumbing.
Which related services help with shower problems?
A slow shower drain may need Drain Cleaning or Hydro Jet Drain Cleaning, and old, corroded pipes found during a shower repair can be replaced with Pipe Repair & Repiping Services.
Shower problems are sometimes linked to other parts of your plumbing, and handling them together can save time. A deeper clog of hair and soap scum is a common reason a shower drains slowly.

Fixtures, Faucets & Toilets questions
A running toilet wastes water and shows up on your next bill. It's usually a flapper, fill valve or float adjustment, which is a simple repair.
Yes. Bring your own faucet, toilet or shower valve and we'll install it. We'll also tell you up front if the part won't fit your rough-in before we open anything.
Usually a clogged cartridge or aerator, a partially closed angle stop, or scale in the mixing valve. On whole-house low pressure the cause is more often the pressure regulator or the supply line.
Yes. A toilet that rocks breaks the wax seal, and the leak goes into the subfloor where you can't see it. It should be pulled, re-sealed and properly shimmed.
